An important feature of any boundary protection
system is user discovery. Administrators do not wish to maintain
mulitple lists of users on internal machines and on boundary
machines.
Vanguard allows the use of external authentication
databases to allow automatic user discovery from any database
including industry standard LDAP, ADSI or SQL. Custom libaries
allow integration with any database. Authentication against
Microsoft Exhange, Lotus Notes\Domino and Gordano Messaging
Suite is inbuilt.
On receipt of a message, Vanguard will query
the internal server to check user existence. This response
is then cached for a period of time. This allows Vanguard
to reduce load on the internal network by caching both known
and unknown users.
Further optimisations using LDAP allow Vanguard
to go a step further. Complete user lists can be downloaded
and cached periodically. This allows Vanguard to automatically
detect unknown users without the need to query the internal
server.
