Detection of spam messages is best achieved
using a layered approach. No single technology provides a
single magic answer to detecting spam.
Vanguard employs over 100 independent checks
to detect spam, each of which can be configured by the system
administrator to suit their own environment.
This layered approach has a number
of advantages. Traditional word and phrase matching is becoming
increasingly less effective against spam as messages use more
and more esoteric formats and layouts to fool the filters.
By employing technologies like Gordano's "Message Quality"
which examines the format and structure of a message for non-RFC
compliance and suspicious behaviour it is possible to detect
new spam techniques without resorting to filters. Spam messages
that "pass" the quality check will typically have
formats that can be detected by a traditional filter.
